PM Shehbaz, Asim Munir Head to Switzerland for Iran-US Talks

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir left for Switzerland early on Sunday, June 21, to attend technical-level talks between Iran and the United States in Bürgenstock. The visit marks another high-profile step in Pakistan’s mediation role after Islamabad helped facilitate a fragile understanding between Washington and Tehran.

According to official statements, the prime minister and the military leadership are travelling with a high-level delegation for discussions scheduled under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. The talks are expected to focus on translating the broad political agreement into practical commitments, including security guarantees, de-escalation steps and mechanisms to keep the peace process alive.

The Foreign Office said representatives of Iran and the United States would take part in the Switzerland meeting, with Pakistan and Qatar joining as mediators. Islamabad has described its role as facilitative, saying it wants to advance the understanding already reached between the two sides and reduce the risk of renewed regional instability.

The development comes after the United States and Iran signed a framework agreement intended to halt months of conflict and reopen channels for further negotiations. Under the reported arrangement, Washington and Tehran agreed to move toward ending hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and entering a defined period of follow-up talks on unresolved issues.

Officials have presented Pakistan’s involvement as an example of active diplomacy at a critical moment for the region. The Prime Minister’s Office said Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir would participate in the process to support implementation of the Islamabad MoU, while the Foreign Office maintained that Pakistan would continue working for regional peace and stability.

The Switzerland talks are important because the agreement remains delicate. Iran has indicated it wants firm assurances that commitments will be honoured, while the United States is seeking progress on security concerns, nuclear restrictions and regional ceasefire arrangements. Any breakdown could revive pressure on energy routes and deepen uncertainty across the Middle East.

Pakistan’s interest is direct and strategic. A wider confrontation involving Iran would affect Pakistan’s western border, fuel prices, regional trade and maritime security in the Gulf. Islamabad also has to balance relations with Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, China and the United States, making sustained diplomacy essential for both security and economic stability.

The talks also carry domestic significance for the government. At a time when Pakistan is trying to present itself as a constructive international player, the participation of both the prime minister and the country’s top military leadership signals that Islamabad views the negotiations as a matter of national priority rather than routine foreign policy engagement.

The immediate challenge will be to move from symbolic mediation to concrete outcomes. If the Switzerland meeting produces a roadmap for implementation, Pakistan could gain diplomatic credibility and space for wider economic engagement. If the talks stall, Islamabad may face renewed pressure to keep rival sides at the table while protecting its own regional interests.
