The federal government has declared Monday, November 9, a public holiday across Pakistan to commemorate the birth anniversary of national poet and philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal. The Cabinet Division confirmed the observance under the government’s public-holiday schedule for 2026.
A Cabinet Division press release stated that government and private institutions would remain closed for the occasion. Employees and students should still follow any operational instructions issued by their respective workplaces, educational institutions or local administrations.
The State Bank of Pakistan has separately confirmed that it and the institutions under its holiday schedule will remain closed on Monday. Banking customers may therefore need to use digital channels or complete branch-based transactions before the extended closure.
Iqbal Day is observed annually on November 9, marking the birth of Muhammad Iqbal in Sialkot in 1877. His poetry and philosophical writings addressed spiritual renewal, individual development and the political future of Muslims in the Indian subcontinent.
Iqbal’s 1930 presidential address to the All-India Muslim League is widely regarded as an important contribution to the political thinking that preceded Pakistan’s creation. His literary works in Urdu and Persian remain part of educational curricula and continue to be studied across Pakistan and internationally.
Public institutions and educational organisations traditionally mark the occasion through ceremonies, speeches, poetry recitations and discussions about Iqbal’s intellectual legacy. Provincial departments and individual institutions may issue separate notices concerning commemorative events and reopening arrangements.
Because November 9 falls on a Monday in 2026, organisations that normally close on Saturday and Sunday will have a three-day break from November 7 through November 9. Regular activities are expected to resume on Tuesday, November 10, unless an institution announces a different schedule.
