Pakistan Rejects Afghan Taliban Drone Strike Claims

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday rejected claims by the Afghan Taliban that strikes had been carried out against alleged militant hideouts in Pakistani border regions, sharply pushing back against what officials described as a misleading narrative amid already tense relations between Islamabad and Kabul.

The Ministry of Information issued the rebuttal through its official fact-checking platform after Afghan Taliban-linked statements claimed that targets in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan had been hit. Pakistani officials said the assertion was baseless and designed to obscure the real source of cross-border militancy.

According to the official response, the Afghan Taliban had alleged that Islamic State Khorasan Province camps were targeted through drone activity near the border. Pakistan rejected that version and said such claims were part of a broader misinformation effort intended to shift attention away from militant networks operating from Afghan territory.

The ministry said a rudimentary drone entered Pakistani airspace near Shinko in Khyber district and was quickly detected and neutralised by Pakistan Air Force air defence systems. Officials also released an image of the downed device, presenting it as evidence that the incident involved an attempted intrusion rather than a successful operation inside Pakistan.

In its statement, the government accused the Taliban administration of using public claims to divert attention from groups that Pakistan says continue to function from areas under Kabul’s control. Islamabad has repeatedly linked the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan and other militant outfits to sanctuaries across the border, a charge the Afghan Taliban has denied.

The exchange follows a period of heightened border tension. Earlier this month, Pakistan said it had conducted strikes against militant hideouts along the Afghan frontier, with officials stating that 26 militants were killed. Those operations came after a series of attacks targeting Pakistani military and police personnel.

Pakistan has long pressed Kabul to provide verifiable counter-terrorism guarantees and prevent Afghan soil from being used against neighbouring states. While the Taliban government insists that militancy inside Pakistan is Islamabad’s internal issue, Pakistani officials maintain that durable relations depend on credible action against armed groups operating from Afghanistan.

The latest dispute also carries diplomatic significance because previous mediation efforts, including engagement involving China, had temporarily reduced open hostility between the two sides. Renewed accusations now threaten to undermine that fragile calm and complicate efforts to build a more stable border-management framework.

For Pakistan, the matter goes beyond a single drone incident. Persistent cross-border militancy affects security operations, civilian movement, trade routes and public confidence in border districts, where communities are often the first to absorb the consequences of escalation.

Authorities are expected to remain on alert along sensitive border areas while continuing to raise the issue through diplomatic and international channels. The next phase will depend on whether Kabul responds with cooperation, denial or further counterclaims, but the latest official rebuttal shows Islamabad is prepared to publicly challenge narratives it considers harmful to national security.
