Security forces said all students and teachers were safely evacuated from Cadet College Wana in South Waziristan, where an operation continued to clear remaining militants. Officials said a vehicle-borne explosive device struck the main gate, damaging buildings and triggering a carefully paced response to prioritise the cadets' safety. At the time of the assault, hundreds of people, including more than 500 cadets, were inside the institution.
The incident came amid strained Pakistan-Afghanistan ties and collapsed talks, with Islamabad again urging Kabul to restrain groups staging attacks from Afghan territory. Security sources said the clearance operation would continue until the last assailant was neutralised.
