UPS cargo jet crashes in Louisville; deaths reported

A UPS MD-11 cargo jet crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, igniting a massive fire that produced thick black smoke over nearby industrial buildings. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said at least seven people were killed and more were injured, with authorities warning the toll could rise as victims on the ground are accounted for.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported three crew members were aboard the aircraft, all feared dead. Local TV footage showed flames and smoke as the jet lifted off with one wing already on fire before descending into an industrial area beyond the runway.

Emergency officials imposed a shelter-in-place order within five miles of the airport. Flight-tracking data indicated the aircraft reached roughly 175 feet and about 184 knots before a sharp descent. The National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a team and will lead the investigation, a process that typically takes months to determine probable cause and issue safety recommendations.

UPS, whose global air hub is in Louisville, said it was assessing the situation and had not yet confirmed injuries or casualties. The airport temporarily shut its airfield following the incident.
