SMEConnect portal to let businesses track bank financing applications

The State Bank of Pakistan’s SMEConnect portal is designed to provide small and medium enterprises with a centralised route for submitting and tracking bank-financing applications, according to officials briefed on the initiative.

The digital platform will allow applicants to follow the progress of their financing requests in real time. It is also intended to provide formal reasons when an application is rejected, giving businesses greater visibility over the process.

Commercial banks will continue to make the final decision on approving or rejecting financing. They have been directed to process applications promptly and on merit through the unified system.

Officials said the portal is meant to reduce procedural hurdles that small and medium enterprises have faced when seeking funds to modernise or expand their operations. The system is expected to bring applications into a more standardised digital workflow.

The initiative comes as access to formal financing remains a major challenge for many smaller businesses. Better tracking and documented decisions could help applicants identify issues in their submissions and make the process more transparent.

The practical impact of the portal will depend on how consistently banks use the system and how quickly applications are processed. Businesses will still need to meet each lender’s eligibility, documentation and credit-assessment requirements.
