Police say they foiled a suspected militant attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district on Wednesday after intercepting a suspicious vehicle near Gandi Chowk. Two suspected militants, including an alleged suicide bomber, were killed during the ensuing exchange of fire, while another suspect escaped after reportedly being wounded.

According to the police account, officers were alerted to a car with tinted windows moving suspiciously in the area. A police contingent was sent to investigate, but the vehicle’s occupants allegedly opened fire after noticing the approaching personnel and attempted to flee. Officers returned fire, killing two people travelling in the car.

Police described one of those killed as a suspected suicide attacker. Officials said a third suspect was injured but managed to escape from the scene, prompting authorities to begin an extensive search of the surrounding area. Additional police personnel and Counter Terrorism Department teams were subsequently deployed to support the operation and locate the fugitive.

Investigators recovered weapons, ammunition, women’s burqas, a flag associated with a banned organisation and other prohibited material from the vehicle, according to police. Officials said the discoveries indicated that the suspects may have been preparing for a substantial attack, although the intended target had not been established when the initial reports were issued.

Authorities have begun examining the recovered vehicle, weapons and other materials to identify the suspects, determine their possible destination and establish whether additional people were involved. No independent details about a specific target were immediately available, so the police assessment that a major attack had been prevented remains subject to the continuing investigation.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed praised the Lakki Marwat personnel for their response. He said their timely action had helped protect the public and commended the officers for confronting a potentially dangerous situation. Police officials also indicated that security and search operations would continue in the area.

The incident is significant because Lakki Marwat and other southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have repeatedly experienced militant violence targeting police, security personnel and civilians. The presence of an alleged suicide bomber and the materials recovered from the vehicle will now be central to determining the scale and intended objective of the suspected plot.

The immediate priorities for investigators are to capture the escaped suspect, verify the identities and affiliations of those killed and establish whether the group received assistance before reaching Gandi Chowk. Further conclusions about the alleged attack plan will depend on forensic examination, intelligence findings and any additional evidence recovered during the search operation.
