Kharan Deputy Commissioner Still Missing as Search Continues in Balochistan

QUETTA: The deputy commissioner of Kharan and three people travelling with him remained missing on Monday as authorities continued efforts to trace them after they disappeared while travelling from Quetta toward Kharan. Police said the group was travelling in a private vehicle when contact was lost along the Nushki Road route a day earlier.

The missing party included the deputy commissioner, a driver and two accompanying guards, according to the latest police account. Investigators suspect that armed men may have intercepted the vehicle and abducted its occupants, although authorities had not publicly confirmed the circumstances of their disappearance or identified those responsible at the time of the latest update.

Search and recovery efforts are continuing across the area, with provincial authorities attempting to determine the officials' whereabouts and secure their safe return. Security agencies have been monitoring routes connecting Nushki and Kharan, an area where difficult terrain and long distances between population centres can complicate rapid searches and communication.

The disappearance comes amid separate abduction incidents reported elsewhere in Balochistan. Two cricketers from Sui, identified as Zakir Bugti and Dadan Bugti, also remain missing after travelling to Kandhkot in Sindh to participate in a cricket match. They were reportedly intercepted by armed men while returning near the Kachi Canal area and taken to an undisclosed location.

There was, however, progress in another case in Mastung district. Three policemen who had been abducted from Panjpaai were released safely following intervention by tribal elders and local community figures. The men, including a retired police official, had reportedly been taken from a house where they were attending a wedding ceremony.

The release in Mastung demonstrates the continuing role of tribal elders and local intermediaries in negotiating the recovery of abducted people in parts of Balochistan. Authorities have also relied on local contacts during previous search operations, particularly in remote districts where community networks can provide information that may not immediately be available through conventional law-enforcement channels.

Security concerns remain elevated across several districts of the province following recent militant attacks, road blockades and kidnapping incidents. A separate security operation near Kalat recently resulted in the recovery of 23 abducted people after armed men had attempted to disrupt traffic on a major highway, according to official accounts. These incidents have prompted increased patrols and search activity along important provincial routes.

Authorities have not announced a breakthrough in the search for the Kharan deputy commissioner and his companions. The immediate priority remains locating the missing group and determining whether they were abducted, while further information is expected as police, security agencies and local officials continue their investigation and recovery efforts.
