Karachi DHA Imambargah Crash Leads to Terrorism Case

Karachi police on Monday registered a terrorism case against the driver of a Suzuki pick-up that crashed into a tent outside an imambargah in Defence Housing Authority, turning a Muharram gathering into a scene of panic and mourning. The incident took place in DHA Phase VI, where mourners were attending a majlis when the vehicle struck the congregation area.

According to police officials, a teenage girl identified as 14-year-old Zunaira Akram died from her injuries after being shifted to a private hospital on Sunday night. At least 19 other mourners were injured in the crash, with several taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and others moved to private medical facilities.

South DIG Syed Asad Raza said the driver and three companions had been taken into custody. The case was registered on the complaint of the imambargah’s security head, and police later transferred the investigation to the Counter-Terrorism Department because of the nature of the allegations made in the FIR.

The senior police officer said the vehicle approached the imambargah around 9:30pm on Sunday and crashed through security barriers placed nearly 200 metres from the venue. The pick-up then entered the tent where mourners were seated, striking several attendees before coming to a halt.

Police said personnel and scouts had already been deployed at the site as part of Muharram security arrangements. After the crash, law enforcement and rescue teams shifted the injured to hospitals, while the Bomb Disposal Squad was called to examine the vehicle for any suspicious material.

The FIR described the incident as more than a traffic accident, alleging that the vehicle was driven into the gathering under a pre-planned scheme. The complainant claimed the act was intended to cause fear and harm during a religious gathering and invoked provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code and Anti-Terrorism Act.

The report named the accused driver as Mohammed Zahid and identified three companions as Bahadur Saeed, Momin Khan and Arsalan alias Nadan. Police said CCTV footage and other evidence were being collected to establish the exact sequence of events and determine whether the crash was deliberate, reckless or part of a wider plan.

DIG Raza also said the initial inquiry indicated that two of the detained persons had previous criminal records and were allegedly drug users. Investigators are expected to examine their background, possible motive, movement before the crash and any links suggested in the complaint.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over security around Muharram gatherings in Karachi, where processions, majalis and imambargahs require layered protection during the holy month. The death of a young girl and the injuries to mourners have intensified public demand for a transparent investigation.

The next phase will depend on the CTD’s findings, forensic inspection of the vehicle, hospital reports, witness statements and CCTV analysis. Authorities will now have to determine whether the terrorism charges are supported by evidence, while also ensuring accountability for the deadly crash and protection for religious gatherings during the remaining Muharram days.
