Five BDU Personnel Martyred in North Waziristan Terror Attack

Five bomb disposal unit personnel were martyred in North Waziristan’s Razmak subdivision after terrorists attacked their team during curfew hours, according to the report published on Monday. The assault took place in the Waidoon area of Dosali tehsil, near a security checkpost, while the BDU team was performing operational duties.

Sources said armed militants targeted the personnel suddenly, leaving five members of the unit martyred on the spot. The attack immediately triggered a high-security response across the area, with forces moving to seal key routes and prevent the attackers from escaping.

The bodies of the martyred personnel were later shifted by helicopter to the Combined Military Hospital in Bannu for formal procedures and funeral arrangements. The air evacuation reflected the sensitivity of the incident and the security challenges involved in operating in the region.

Security forces cordoned off the affected locality soon after the attack and launched an extensive search and clearance operation. Multiple checkpoints were also established on important routes, while movement in and around the area was placed under strict surveillance.

The attack has again highlighted the dangerous work performed by bomb disposal teams in conflict-affected districts. These units often operate in high-risk environments where militants use improvised explosive devices, ambush tactics and difficult terrain to target both security forces and civilians.

North Waziristan has long remained one of Pakistan’s most sensitive security zones because of its location, terrain and history of militant activity. Although major military operations have weakened organised militant networks, sporadic attacks and targeted assaults continue to pose serious risks for law enforcement and security personnel.

Razmak and its surrounding areas have strategic importance due to their routes, mountainous geography and proximity to locations where security forces frequently conduct operations. Attacks on technical teams such as bomb disposal units are particularly damaging because they target personnel trained to neutralise threats before they can cause wider casualties.

For Pakistan, the incident carries wider security implications. It comes at a time when authorities are already dealing with renewed militancy concerns in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where police, military personnel and specialised counter-explosive teams remain on the front line of the fight against terrorism.

The immediate focus is now on tracing the attackers and identifying any support network that helped plan or execute the assault. The search operation is expected to continue until the area is cleared, while the martyrdom of the five personnel is likely to renew calls for stronger protection, better equipment and expanded intelligence support for bomb disposal teams operating in high-threat zones.
