Senate Restores Full Workweek After Fuel Price Relief

The Senate Secretariat has withdrawn its fuel conservation and additional austerity restrictions with immediate effect, restoring normal office operations after a sharp easing in fuel prices. The decision, issued in Islamabad on Saturday, June 20, means the upper house’s administrative offices will return to a regular five-day schedule from Monday, June 22.

According to the official notification, the earlier restrictions introduced in March have now been terminated. The secretariat will operate from Monday to Friday with full staff strength, reversing the reduced working arrangements that had been adopted during a period of high fuel costs and fiscal pressure.

The new office timings set 9am to 5pm for non-session days. On days when the Senate is in session, staff will continue working from 9am until the sitting concludes, ensuring that parliamentary business, committee work and administrative support are not disrupted during legislative proceedings.

The notification was signed by Deputy Secretary HRM-I Qasim Omer and issued with the approval of the Senate chairman. It has also been marked for publication in the Gazette of Pakistan as an extraordinary notification, while copies have been circulated to senators, senior Senate officials, the Cabinet Division and other relevant offices.

The rollback follows a wider government move to end fuel-saving restrictions after global oil prices eased and domestic fuel rates were reduced. Officials linked the improvement to diplomatic developments involving the United States and Iran, which helped calm fears of prolonged disruption in energy markets and eased pressure on Pakistan’s import bill.

Pakistan had introduced fuel conservation and austerity measures earlier this year to limit non-essential spending at a time when high international oil prices were adding strain to public finances. Ministries and public offices were asked to reduce operational costs, conserve fuel and adjust work routines as the government tried to meet fiscal targets.

The Senate Secretariat’s decision also follows Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s approval to end similar restrictions notified by the Cabinet Division since March 9. However, market timing measures issued earlier in June will remain in place, showing that the government is still retaining selected controls while allowing key institutions to resume normal functioning.

For public-sector employees and parliamentary staff, the return to a full workweek is expected to improve administrative coordination, file processing, committee support and communication between legislators and government departments. It may also help reduce delays that can occur when restricted schedules affect attendance and internal decision-making.

The change carries broader political and economic significance because fuel prices have been a major public concern in recent months. Any administrative rollback linked to lower fuel costs allows the government to project a sense of relief and normalisation, especially after households and businesses faced higher transport and operational expenses.

The next step will be watching whether other public bodies follow the same pattern and fully restore pre-austerity routines. If fuel prices remain stable and fiscal conditions do not worsen, more departments may gradually return to normal schedules while the government continues to balance cost control with institutional efficiency.
