Bannu Twin Blasts Kill Seven, Injure Three in KP

Seven people were killed and three others were injured on Saturday, June 20, after two back-to-back explosions struck the Barghanto area of Bannu in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials said. The blasts took place in a semi-tribal belt where local movement, policing and rescue work are often complicated by difficult terrain and persistent security threats.

According to District Police Officer Yasir Afridi, the first explosion occurred near a passenger-loaded Datsun vehicle within the limits of Ahmedzai police station. The vehicle was carrying people linked to the Hathikhel tribe when the blast hit, causing immediate casualties and triggering a rapid response by locals, police and rescue workers.

Officials said the situation worsened when a second explosion went off during rescue activity at the same location. The follow-up blast injured additional people and created fresh danger for those attempting to move the dead and wounded from the scene. The bodies were shifted to a Rural Health Centre, while the injured, including children, were taken to Khalifa Gul Nawaz Teaching Hospital in Bannu for treatment.

Police and security personnel reached the area soon after the incident, cordoned off the site and began collecting evidence. Authorities said a roadside improvised explosive device also damaged the vehicle of Sub-Divisional Tehsildar Waziri Abidullah, though he escaped unharmed. Investigators are examining whether the two explosions were linked through a planned sequence meant to target both passengers and first responders.

Senior officials condemned the attack and expressed grief over the deaths. President Asif Ali Zardari conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the recovery of the injured, while federal and provincial authorities called for a thorough investigation. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administration is expected to seek a detailed report from local police on the security lapse, the nature of the explosive material and the possible network behind the attack.

Bannu has remained one of the most sensitive districts in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa because of its proximity to former tribal areas and routes historically used by militant groups. Attacks on passenger vehicles, police parties and local peace-linked figures have repeatedly disrupted public life in the region, where residents depend heavily on small transport vehicles to reach markets, hospitals and administrative centres.

Provincial authorities have announced higher law-and-order allocations for the new fiscal year, including spending on police operations, protective gear, surveillance systems, drones, thermal cameras and Safe City projects in vulnerable districts such as Bannu, Lakki Marwat and Dera Ismail Khan.

For local communities, the immediate impact is both human and psychological. Families of the victims now face sudden loss, injured survivors require medical care, and residents in the area are likely to face tighter checks and restricted movement as the search operation continues. The attack also places fresh pressure on the provincial government to improve intelligence coordination and protect civilians in high-risk zones.
