KP Storms Kill Nine as Heavy Rain Triggers Emergency Relief

PESHAWAR: At least nine people lost their lives and seven others were injured after powerful winds, lightning and heavy rain struck multiple districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday, prompting emergency response teams to move into affected areas.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority reported that the fatalities included five men, two women and two children. The deaths were linked to severe weather incidents in several districts, where sudden storms damaged homes and disrupted daily life.

Officials said four houses were affected by the latest spell of rain and wind. Three homes suffered partial damage, while one property was completely destroyed, leaving families in urgent need of support and temporary assistance.

According to the PDMA, the incidents were reported from Dera Ismail Khan, Upper Dir, Kohat and Orakzai. Rescue 1122 teams, district administrations and disaster management staff were carrying out relief and rescue operations in coordination with local authorities.

The PDMA director general directed officials to immediately provide relief goods to affected households and accelerate field operations. The authority also advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from vulnerable tourist locations during the ongoing unstable weather conditions.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is frequently exposed to weather-related disasters because of its mountainous terrain, fragile infrastructure and settlements located near slopes, streams and river channels. Heavy rain often increases the risk of roof collapses, landslides, flash flooding and road blockages in both urban and remote areas.

The latest casualties come as Pakistan enters another period of weather volatility, with authorities repeatedly warning that intense rain and windstorms can turn deadly within minutes. For many communities, especially in rural districts, weak housing structures and limited access to rapid emergency services increase the danger.

The impact is likely to extend beyond the immediate loss of life. Damaged homes, interrupted transport routes and fear of additional rainfall can affect livelihoods, school attendance, farming activity and access to healthcare, particularly in districts where road links are already vulnerable.

Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the weather situation and coordinating assistance for affected families.
