KARACHI: A gas leak triggered a powerful explosion on the first floor of a three-storey residential building in Soldier Bazaar No 3 on Thursday, causing a section of the structure to collapse and leaving multiple families trapped under debris.

Rescue officials said at least five people were killed and 12 were injured. A 10-year-old girl, Nazia, and a 60-year-old man, Mohammad Riaz, were among the deceased. Rescuers also recovered the body of a woman, while authorities were still working to confirm the identity of another victim.

Emergency teams launched a search operation and pulled several people from the rubble, including a 14-year-old girl found injured. Officials warned that at least two people could still be trapped, while narrow streets around the site slowed the movement of heavy equipment. Police secured the area and tightened security as the operation continued.
