JHELUM: Religious scholar Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza remained safe after an assault attempt at his academy in Jhelum late Sunday night, according to police and reporting carried by Geo News.
Officials said the incident occurred after a lecture while Mirza was engaged in a photo session. A young man allegedly raised slogans and then attempted to attack him, but was overpowered and arrested at the scene. Police said the suspect was unarmed.
A case was registered at the City Police Station, Jhelum. The complainant stated that the suspect grabbed Mirza by the throat and tried to strangle him using both hands before being restrained.
The First Information Report said the attacker shouted slogans during the incident, including ones associated with Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). The party had not issued a statement at the time of reporting.
Mirza’s lawyer, Muhammad Tahir Ayyubi, told the BBC that the suspect entered the room on the pretext of requesting a photograph, handed his phone to a staff member, and then moved close before attempting the assault.
