Sadiq Khan praises Lahore’s Basant, urges safe celebrations

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has shared positive sentiments about Lahore’s Basant festivities, saying he was delighted to see the celebrations return and the happiness they brought to people across Pakistan.

Speaking to Geo News in London, Khan said he watched coverage of the festival and was struck by the joy visible on rooftops and in neighbourhoods. He offered prayers that Basant continues to be observed in a safe manner and welcomed the sight of kite-flying resuming in Lahore.

Basant, a springtime cultural tradition closely associated with Lahore, has historically drawn large gatherings for kite-flying, music and community celebrations. In recent years, the festival has faced restrictions due to safety concerns, including dangerous kite strings and rooftop-related accidents.

Khan emphasised that public safety should remain the priority whenever such large-scale festivities take place, so the tradition can continue without putting residents at risk.
