KARACHI: A major fire erupted at a factory located in the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Karachi’s Landhi area on Friday night, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan said multiple fire tenders and snorkels were dispatched from across the city to tackle what he described as a third-degree blaze. He added that initial information suggested no one was inside the affected facility at the time.
Firefighters battled intense flames as the building structure began showing stress, with cracks appearing in portions of the factory walls due to the heat. The chief fire officer said two KMC snorkels were actively engaged and another was called in to strengthen the operation.
Officials said the presence of combustible materials — including cotton and plastic — helped feed the fire and increased its intensity. Rescue 1122 also reported that the fire started on the ground floor and quickly spread to the first floor.
Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho ordered traffic to be kept away from the surrounding area to ensure smooth movement for rescue and fire-fighting units.
The incident comes amid a recent series of fires in Karachi, including a blaze at a Saddar mobile market that was contained by rescue teams. Authorities have emphasised the need for improved safety and rapid response readiness as investigations continue into the cause of the Landhi factory fire.
