UK launches free AI training push to upskill 10 million adults by 2030

The UK government has announced a national initiative that will offer free artificial intelligence training to adults, with a target of equipping 10 million people with AI skills by 2030.

The programme will provide short, online modules open to UK residents, focusing on practical workplace use—such as writing effective prompts for AI chatbots and applying AI tools to routine administrative tasks. The report said the training has been developed in collaboration with major technology companies including Google, Microsoft and Amazon.

Participants who complete the learning pathway will receive an “AI foundations” digital badge backed by the government. Public-sector partners including the NHS, business groups and local government bodies are expected to encourage sign-ups. The report also noted concerns raised by policy researchers, who argued that successful adaptation requires more than technical know-how and should also build critical thinking and leadership skills.
