Pakistan has carried out a successful flight test of Fa’az, its first indigenously developed air-to-air missile, the military said on Tuesday. The test was described as a milestone for the country’s aerospace and defence capabilities, with the weapon intended for use against aerial targets.

According to the military, Fa’az has a terminal guidance system and can engage aerial targets at longer ranges. Terminal guidance refers to the system used during the final phase of a missile’s flight to guide it towards its target. The military did not disclose the missile’s range, speed, payload or timeline for operational induction.

The military said the new system would expand the operational flexibility of the Pakistan Air Force and strengthen the country’s overall defence posture. It also presented the flight test as evidence of greater technical capability and self-reliance in the domestic defence industry.

Senior armed forces officers attended the launch alongside scientists and engineers involved in the weapon system’s development, the military said. President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and the service chiefs congratulated the technical teams after the test.

The announcement adds an air-to-air weapon to Pakistan’s recent series of domestically developed missile tests. In October, the military announced tests of the extended-range Fatah-2 hypersonic ballistic missile and an extended version of the Fatah-IV ground-launched cruise missile. Those systems serve different roles from an air-to-air missile, which is designed to be launched from an aircraft against airborne targets.

Pakistan’s defence sector has increasingly highlighted indigenous design, engineering and production in official announcements. Developing such systems can reduce dependence on overseas suppliers, although the military statement did not provide details about the missile’s manufacturing chain, integration platform or production scale.

The flight test confirms the successful test event announced by the military, but independent technical assessment is limited because key performance specifications were not released. Further official information would be needed to establish the missile’s operational range, aircraft compatibility, service status and deployment plans.
