At least four people were martyred when gunmen opened fire on the convoy of North Waziristan Assistant Commissioner Shah Waliullah on Miranshah Road in Bannu district, officials said. The dead include the AC and two policemen; additional injuries were reported.
The attackers seized weapons from police personnel before fleeing. A search operation was launched as investigators worked to piece together the sequence of events.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi condemned the assault, sought a report from the inspector general of police and ordered the best possible treatment for the injured. The attack came a day after a suicide blast in Lakki Marwat targeted a police mobile, underlining a surge in violence across the province.
Authorities have repeatedly warned of rising militant activity in KP and Balochistan and vowed swift action against those responsible.
