LHC slams Punjab’s anti-smog measures, orders tougher enforcement

The Lahore High Court voiced strong displeasure over the provincial government’s response to choking smog in the city, observing that transport emissions account for a major share of pollution. Justice Shahid Kareem summoned the Lahore deputy commissioner and urged authorities to prioritise fixes at home rather than deflecting blame.

The court directed an intensified crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles and questioned the utility of so-called anti-smog guns. It also criticised weak enforcement of restaurant closing times, flagging gaps in compliance with previous court orders.

As hazardous air enveloped parts of Punjab and northern India, Lahore ranked among the world’s most polluted cities, with air quality readings in the very unhealthy range. Health experts advised residents to limit outdoor activity and use protective masks.

Provincial officials said coordinated actions—including curbs on substandard fuel and garbage burning—were underway and claimed that air quality had shown some improvement. The seasonal smog, driven by emissions, crop residue burning and winter weather patterns, continues to pose serious respiratory risks.
