Karachi Traffic Police recorded more than 4,000 violations after rolling out a new e-challan ticketing system aimed at improving road safety and curbing on-the-spot discretion. Data shared by officials shows 2,194 fines for not wearing seat belts, 891 for riding without helmets, and 491 for speeding. Additional penalties targeted red-light jumping, wrong-way driving and mobile phone use behind the wheel, along with smaller counts for tinted windows and passengers atop bus roofs.
Authorities said the platform reduces confrontation and human bias by using AI-integrated CCTV to automatically detect offences. DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah warned the public to ignore fraudulent SMS messages about e-challans, clarifying that tickets are not being sent by text at this stage.
The province is phasing out manual ticketing with a fully digitised workflow linked to excise, licensing and NADRA e-Sahulat databases. TRACS Sahulat centres will assist motorists in paying fines or contesting violations, while a companion app allows real-time checks and payments. The first deployment includes 200 cameras in Karachi, with a citywide expansion to 12,000 planned and future rollouts across Sindh, backed by oversight from the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee.
