Karachi’s faceless e-challan regime booked 2,662 violations worth more than Rs12.5 million within six hours of launch on Tuesday, the traffic police said. The first-day tally included 1,535 tickets for not wearing seat belts, 507 for riding without helmets, 419 for overspeeding and 166 for red-light jumps, alongside smaller counts for lane and stop-line breaches, tinted windows, wrong-way driving and mobile phone use.
The rollout follows the inauguration of the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS) at the Central Police Office by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah. Officials said AI-enabled CCTV cameras detect violations, replacing the old manual process to minimize human discretion and confrontation while improving transparency.
Authorities have set up TRACS “Sahulat” centres at major traffic offices and police stations to assist residents with fine payments, clarifications and appeals. The system is integrated with government databases, including excise and taxation, the driving licence system and NADRA e-Sahulat, and links to modern payment gateways to allow secure online and mobile payments.
An initial network of 200 cameras has been installed across the city, with expansion planned to 12,000 devices and eventual rollout beyond Karachi. Officials say the initiative aims to transform traffic enforcement, strengthen road safety and deliver quicker citizen services through digital governance.
