Govt forms high-level team to probe SP Adeel Akbar’s alleged suicide

Authorities have constituted a three-member, high-level committee to investigate the death of Superintendent of Police Adeel Akbar in Islamabad. The probe will be led by the capital’s inspector general, following initial findings that suggest the officer shot himself inside his vehicle near a hotel.

Officials said closed-circuit television footage reviewed so far does not indicate any outside attack and that the incident unfolded inside the car. Forensic teams have seized the weapon and examined ballistic evidence to establish the exact sequence of events.

Investigators are working to unlock and analyze the officer’s mobile phone data, while statements are being recorded from colleagues and staff present around the time of the incident. According to preliminary reports, the firearm was taken from the officer’s official gunman before the shooting. He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to PIMS, where he was pronounced dead.

The case has shaken the police force. SP Akbar, originally from Gujrat district and a top performer of his civil service batch, was serving as the zonal head of the Industrial Area police. He is survived by a young daughter. The committee will determine motive, timeline and any procedural lapses before presenting its findings to the government.
