Meta study: Instagram pushes risky body-image content to teens

Internal research reviewed by Reuters indicates that teenagers who reported frequently feeling worse about their bodies after using Instagram were exposed to substantially more posts featuring body-focused and eating-disorder-adjacent themes than their peers. In a survey of 1,149 teens across the 2023–24 school year, Meta’s team found that among the most vulnerable users, such content accounted for roughly a tenth of viewed posts—about three times the share seen by other teens.

Researchers said the material often displayed provocative imagery, explicit judgment of body types and cues linked to disordered eating. While much of it did not violate platform rules, the authors warned it may be unsuitable for minors. They added that existing enforcement tools were missing the vast majority of sensitive content under review, reflecting the early stage of new detection systems.

Meta said the study forms part of efforts to better understand youth experiences and improve safeguards. The company highlighted recent steps to limit mature themes for minors and to push feeds toward PG-13-style standards. External experts who saw the findings described the methodology as rigorous but cautioned that the research shows correlation, not causation, between exposure and declining body image.

The report urged tighter limits on how much of this material teens encounter, echoing advice from parents, pediatricians and Meta’s own advisory councils. The researchers issued a trigger warning for some examples cited in the study and argued for stronger classification and recommendation controls to protect at-risk users.
