Security forces thwarted a Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan suicide attack on a camp in North Waziristan on Friday, killing four militants, security sources said. The assault began when a bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a boundary wall, after which three gunmen tried to breach the compound.
Troops engaged the attackers immediately and shot the infiltrators dead before they could enter the facility. No losses were reported on the security-forces side. Officials said the incident underscores the continuing threat posed by the Afghan Taliban-backed TTP despite stepped-up operations in the northwest.
The failed raid capped a deadly stretch for the group. A day earlier, the Pakistan Army eliminated 45 to 50 militants while foiling an infiltration attempt amid border tensions with Afghanistan. From October 13 to 15, 34 militants were killed in intelligence-based operations across North Waziristan, South Waziristan and Bannu.
Authorities note that Pakistan has seen an uptick in cross-border terrorism since 2021. Even as Islamabad and Kabul agreed to a temporary 48-hour ceasefire following border clashes, Pakistan says it will continue targeted actions to prevent militants from using Afghan territory to stage attacks.
