Islamabad police storm NPC, beat journalists; govt orders probe

Islamabad police stormed the National Press Club (NPC) on Thursday during a demonstration linked to the Awami Action Committee’s agitation, drawing widespread condemnation from journalist bodies and government ministers. Eyewitnesses said officers forced their way into the premises, manhandled media workers, and smashed cameras and other equipment despite repeated pleas that no protesters were hiding inside the club.

Journalists present said police chased reporters into the cafeteria, beat several of them, and tried to snatch mobile phones and video cameras. Senior media representatives termed the raid one of the “worst incidents in history” against the press and demanded accountability. The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists and other associations called the assault an attack on press freedom and labelled the raid an act of “terrorism.”

Following an outcry, the interior minister sought a report from the Islamabad police chief and ordered disciplinary action against those responsible. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar also vowed an inquiry. The Karachi Press Club and other regional bodies condemned the violation of NPC’s sanctity, while rights groups demanded an immediate investigation. Discussions among media workers continued at the NPC to determine a collective response as they pressed authorities to ensure such actions are not repeated.
