The federal government has raised petrol and high-speed diesel prices for October 29, increasing the cost of both major transport fuels after the latest review under Pakistan’s petroleum-pricing mechanism. The revised rates took effect on Thursday and will remain applicable until the next daily adjustment.

Petrol has increased by Rs1.85 per litre, taking its retail price from Rs376.06 to Rs377.91. High-speed diesel has risen by Rs1.75 per litre, moving from Rs398.07 to Rs399.82 and leaving the fuel just below the Rs400 threshold.

The adjustment was announced through a Petroleum Division notification following the regulatory review of international petroleum rates, supplier premiums and other incidental costs. Under the current mechanism, changes in the external market are reflected more frequently in domestic fuel prices.

Officials linked the revision to volatility in global oil markets. International crude prices strengthened as renewed fighting in Yemen and an attack on a Saudi refinery raised concerns about additional supply disruptions in the Middle East, increasing pressure on energy-importing economies.

Brent crude futures gained approximately 1.6 per cent to reach $115.69 per barrel during Wednesday’s trading, while US West Texas Intermediate rose about 2.5 per cent to $102.42. Sustained increases at those levels can affect Pakistan’s import bill and subsequent domestic pricing calculations.

The latest increase follows several rapid changes in fuel rates. For October 28, petrol had been reduced by Rs3.19 per litre, while diesel became Rs2.25 more expensive. A day earlier, petrol had increased by Rs1.54 and diesel by Rs2.16, illustrating the volatility created by frequent price reviews.

Petrol-price changes directly affect motorists, motorcycle users and households relying on private transport. Higher diesel rates can have a broader economic effect because the fuel is extensively used by freight vehicles, buses, agricultural machinery and parts of the industrial sector, potentially adding pressure to transportation and distribution costs.

The impact will depend on the direction of international oil prices, exchange-rate movements and the next regulatory calculation. Consumers and businesses should therefore expect continued short-term fluctuations rather than assuming that the October 29 rates will remain stable for an extended period.
