Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has inaugurated Method and Madness, the first of five exhibitions planned as part of the World Culture Festival Karachi 2026. The opening brought Pakistani and international artists together at the Arts Council of Pakistan in Karachi as the city began an extensive programme of cultural events.

The exhibition features work by 12 international and 14 Pakistani artists. After viewing the collection, Wahab welcomed the visiting participants to Karachi and expressed hope that they would enjoy both their stay in the city and their exchanges with fellow members of the artistic community.

Method and Madness forms one component of a much larger 25-day festival running until November 22. Organisers say the complete event has attracted approximately 1,000 international artists from more than 150 countries, along with about 500 artists representing Pakistan.

Ireland’s ambassador to Pakistan, Mary O’Neill, attended the exhibition and described the atmosphere surrounding the gathering as highly energetic. She emphasised the value of cultural events during periods of international conflict, noting that artistic engagement can reach across difficult political and social circumstances.

The wider festival programme includes theatre, music, dance, visual arts, film screenings, workshops, live mural painting, fine-arts activities and discussions focused on culture. Participating communities will also share aspects of their traditions, literature, cuisine, social practices and contemporary creative work.

Pakistani folk performances, qawwali, modern music and theatre are being presented alongside productions from other countries. This combination is designed to create opportunities for artists to learn from one another, develop professional connections and introduce audiences to creative traditions that may otherwise receive limited exposure in Pakistan.

Bringing participants from more than 150 countries to Karachi gives the festival a role beyond entertainment. It offers Pakistan a platform for cultural diplomacy while allowing local artists to present their work directly to a large and diverse international creative community.

The participation of 500 Pakistani artists also provides significant domestic representation within the festival. Their involvement places the country’s traditional and contemporary creative practices alongside international work rather than treating local culture as a separate part of the programme.

Four more exhibitions are expected to follow Method and Madness during the festival. The remaining programme will continue through November 22, with Karachi serving as the meeting point for performances, artistic collaboration and cultural discussion involving participants from across the world.
