Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Singaporean Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan have discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, technology and the digital economy as Pakistan and Singapore mark 60 years of diplomatic relations. The visiting foreign minister met the prime minister in Islamabad on Friday during his official visit to Pakistan.
The two sides identified several areas for deeper economic engagement, including financial technology, infrastructure development, logistics, small and medium-sized enterprises and the services sector. They also considered new avenues for mutually beneficial commercial cooperation and stronger contacts between the people of both countries.
The meeting placed particular emphasis on increasing bilateral trade and encouraging investment. Cooperation in digital services and financial technology could connect Pakistan’s growing technology sector with Singapore’s established financial and innovation ecosystem, while discussions on logistics and infrastructure reflected both countries’ interest in improving commercial connectivity.
Shehbaz praised Singapore’s economic transformation and its achievements in development and innovation. He said Pakistan attached importance to its relationship with the Southeast Asian country at both bilateral and multilateral levels, including through the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Balakrishnan and the prime minister reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the longstanding relationship between their countries. They also exchanged views on regional and international developments and agreed on the importance of maintaining engagement through bilateral channels and multilateral forums.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held separate talks with the visiting dignitary. Their discussions reviewed the overall relationship and covered trade, investment, connectivity and skills development, adding a practical economic and workforce dimension to the visit.
Dar and Balakrishnan also exchanged a memorandum of understanding on disaster-management cooperation. The agreement connects Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority with the Singapore Civil Defence Force and is intended to strengthen joint work on disaster preparedness, emergency response and resilience against natural hazards.
The disaster-management agreement is a concrete outcome of the visit at a time when Pakistan remains vulnerable to floods, extreme weather and other climate-related emergencies. Cooperation with Singapore could support institutional coordination and knowledge-sharing, although the details of planned programmes, training activities and implementation timelines were not immediately disclosed.
The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Singapore. It also comes before Singapore assumes the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2027, giving Pakistan an opportunity to deepen engagement with a country expected to hold an influential regional role during the coming year.
The next test will be whether the discussions translate into investment projects, stronger trade flows and operational cooperation between the relevant institutions. Follow-up work will be required to identify specific opportunities in financial technology, infrastructure, logistics, small businesses and skills development, while the two disaster-management agencies will need to convert the memorandum into practical coordination.
