President Asif Ali Zardari has departed Berlin for Pakistan after completing an official visit to Germany focused on diplomatic relations, trade, investment and technological cooperation. Senior German officials and Pakistan’s ambassador to Germany saw him off at Berlin Airport at the conclusion of the trip.

Zardari travelled to Germany at the invitation of President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The visit, held from October 22 to 24, was the first by a Pakistani president in more than two decades and coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

During talks with Steinmeier, the two presidents reviewed bilateral cooperation and discussed opportunities to expand political and economic engagement. Their meeting also covered regional security developments, including Afghanistan, with Pakistan reiterating that its territory and citizens must be protected from militant attacks originating across the border.

The visit included a meeting with senior representatives of Siemens’ healthcare business. Executive Vice President Daniel Frisch expressed readiness to increase the company’s support for Pakistan’s healthcare infrastructure through technological applications, capacity-building initiatives and specialised solutions for conditions including cancer and stroke.

The company’s representatives indicated that a delegation would visit Pakistan to pursue memoranda of understanding with local partners in healthcare technology and professional training. Zardari encouraged greater engagement and said research-based, technology-driven systems were necessary to improve the availability and quality of medical services.

The president said Pakistan valued German industrial and technological expertise and assured investors of institutional support through the Special Investment Facilitation Council. He also stressed the need for affordable and standardised healthcare, particularly for low-income communities and people living in remote areas with limited access to specialised services.

Pakistan and Germany formally established diplomatic relations in 1951 and cooperate in areas including commerce, development, defence, education, healthcare and culture. The anniversary provided both governments with an opportunity to assess the relationship and identify projects capable of converting diplomatic goodwill into measurable economic and social outcomes.

The significance of the visit will ultimately depend on follow-through. Expected next steps include the proposed healthcare agreements, visits by German business representatives and further engagement on trade and investment. Implementation of these commitments will determine whether the presidential trip produces durable partnerships beyond its diplomatic symbolism.
