At least five people were killed and more than 27 others injured after a passenger bus plunged into a drain near a flyover in Hafizabad on Thursday. Rescue 1122 teams responded to the crash and transported the injured passengers to hospital as emergency operations continued at the scene.
The bus was travelling from Raiwind towards Chiniot when the driver apparently lost control near the flyover. Rescue officials said their preliminary assessment indicated that excessive speed may have contributed to the accident, although the definitive cause will require further investigation by the relevant authorities.
Emergency personnel began recovering passengers from the vehicle and providing immediate assistance after reaching the site. More than 27 injured people were shifted for medical treatment, but officials had not immediately released details about their identities, the hospitals receiving them or the severity of their injuries.
The death toll rose to five as rescue work progressed. Authorities were expected to identify the deceased, notify their families and document the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigators will also need to examine the vehicle's condition, the driver's actions and the road environment before establishing responsibility.
The accident follows another serious passenger-vehicle incident reported in Punjab earlier this year. In June, seven people were injured when a speeding passenger van fell into a canal near Dharampura-Chaubcha Phatak in Lahore, underscoring the risks associated with loss of control near waterways and drainage channels.
Hafizabad district has previously witnessed a deadly crash involving a passenger bus. In August 2022, at least seven people were killed and 24 others injured when a bus plunged into a pond near Solangi Kharl on the outskirts of Jalalpur Bhattian. Rescue officials also attributed that accident to speeding.
Punjab Traffic Police guidelines require operators of buses and trucks to remain within prescribed speed limits, keep their vehicles roadworthy and avoid overloading. Compliance with those requirements is particularly important for passenger vehicles travelling between cities, where a single driving or mechanical failure can expose large numbers of people to danger.
The immediate priority remains the treatment of the injured and completion of the recovery operation. Further information is expected after hospitals assess the passengers and investigators inspect the crash site, record witness statements and determine whether speeding, a mechanical problem or other circumstances caused the bus to leave the road.
