Key points
- Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has called for a forceful response to assault cases while pledging that wealth or political influence will not protect offenders.
- Her remarks followed several widely discussed incidents involving attacks on vulnerable citizens and service workers.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday advocated a forceful response to incidents of physical assault, saying victims should be empowered to answer their attackers in the same manner. She made the remarks while addressing a Honhaar scholarship and laptop distribution ceremony in Mandi Bahauddin.
The chief minister referred to several recent cases that attracted widespread attention, including attacks on a female scooter rider in Lahore and a petrol-station employee in Jubilee Town. She said the provincial administration would support victims and ensure that wealth, influence or political connections did not shield alleged offenders from accountability.
Maryam also discussed a case from Multan in which a man allegedly ran over an orphaned teenager. Describing the episode as deeply disturbing, she said reports of violence against vulnerable citizens continued to affect her and required an immediate response from the authorities.
During her address, the chief minister said governance should not depend on creating fear, but maintained that the government must act consistently whenever citizens are mistreated. She added that offenders associated with her own political party would receive no protection if accused of abusing or attacking another person.
In the Lahore scooter case, widely circulated security-camera footage showed a man blocking a woman’s path before allegedly pulling her hair and repeatedly striking her. Police traced and arrested the suspect using footage and information collected from dozens of Punjab Safe Cities Authority cameras. A court subsequently ordered his release if he was not required in another case.
The Jubilee Town incident involved a customer who allegedly attacked a petrol-pump salesman after being asked not to smoke while fuel was being dispensed. The suspect was later taken into custody, while footage connected to the case circulated across social media and intensified public debate about violence, privilege and the treatment of service workers.
Maryam’s latest remarks connect these separate incidents to a wider provincial stance on public safety and equal treatment under the law. Her emphasis on political neutrality places additional responsibility on police and district administrations to investigate complaints consistently, preserve evidence and pursue cases regardless of an accused person’s social standing.
The cases have also highlighted the growing role of surveillance footage and viral videos in documenting alleged abuse. While recordings can help identify suspects and draw official attention, effective accountability ultimately depends on lawful investigations, reliable evidence, fair hearings and the completion of judicial proceedings.
Punjab authorities will now face scrutiny over whether the chief minister’s strong public position produces consistent results beyond initial arrests. Progress in the investigations, prosecutorial follow-through and protection for complainants will determine whether the administration’s promised support translates into durable improvements in public confidence and safety.
