Pakistan Miss Asian Games Final After Sri Lanka Seal Eight-Wicket Win

Pakistan's women's cricket team missed out on a place in the Asian Games gold-medal match after Sri Lanka completed an emphatic eight-wicket victory in their semi-final at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, on Sunday. Pakistan had set a competitive target of 178, but captain Chamari Athapaththu produced a commanding unbeaten innings to send Sri Lanka into Tuesday's final with 13 deliveries remaining.

Pakistan finished their 20 overs at 177 for four despite suffering an immediate setback when opener Gull Feroza was dismissed at the start of the innings. Saira Jabeen and Shawaal Zulfiqar steadied the side before Ayesha Zafar took control of the scoring and helped transform the innings into a strong total.

Ayesha struck 71 from 40 deliveries, hitting nine fours and two sixes during an aggressive performance. She shared a 115-run partnership with Shawaal, who contributed 54 from 50 balls. Ayesha reached her half-century from only 27 deliveries before being run out in the closing stages, while Shawaal also departed after completing her fifty. Captain Fatima Sana added an unbeaten 20 from 12 balls to lift Pakistan to 177 for four.

Sri Lanka began the chase quickly and maintained the required scoring rate despite Pakistan taking two wickets. Imesha Dulani made 27 from 21 balls before Fatima broke the opening partnership, but Athapaththu increasingly dominated the contest. Hasini Perera joined her in a decisive second-wicket partnership and scored 42 from 26 deliveries before Nashra Sandhu removed her.

Athapaththu continued attacking Pakistan's bowling after Perera's dismissal. The Sri Lankan captain finished unbeaten on 83 from 50 deliveries, striking seven fours and six sixes. Harshitha Samarawickrama remained not out on 17 as Sri Lanka reached 178 for two in 17.5 overs, completing the chase comfortably and securing a place in the gold-medal match.

The defeat was Pakistan's second semi-final loss to Sri Lanka in a short period. Sri Lanka had also beaten Pakistan by four wickets in the Women's T20 Asia Cup semi-final earlier in September. Pakistan entered the Asian Games last four after surviving a difficult rain-affected quarter-final against Thailand, chasing 92 with two balls remaining despite losing seven wickets.

Pakistan will now turn their attention to the bronze-medal match scheduled for Tuesday. Their opponent will be determined by the result of the other semi-final, while Sri Lanka will compete for gold. The medal playoff gives Fatima Sana's side another opportunity to finish the tournament with a podium place after their hopes of reaching the final were ended by Athapaththu's match-winning display.
