Karachi Port shipping connectivity hits record high in Q2 2026

Karachi Port has recorded its highest liner shipping connectivity level in the available data, with its Port Liner Shipping Connectivity Index rising to 343.02 in the second quarter of 2026. The latest figure marks a sharp increase from 309.81 in the first quarter and reflects stronger links between Pakistan's principal seaport and international liner shipping networks.

The index measures how closely a port is connected with global container shipping services, using connectivity information covering around 900 ports worldwide. Higher connectivity can give importers and exporters access to a broader range of shipping services and international destinations, potentially improving the movement of goods through major trade routes.

The latest reading represents a notable recovery after fluctuations over the previous two years. Karachi Port's score stood at 329.24 in the second quarter of 2024 before declining to 319.20 in the third quarter and recovering slightly to 323.67 in the final quarter of that year. The index was then recorded at 321.70 in the first quarter of 2025 and 321.84 in the following quarter.

Connectivity weakened further to 298.56 in the third quarter of 2025 before recovering to 321.91 in the final quarter. The score slipped again to 309.81 during the opening quarter of 2026, making the subsequent rise to 343.02 the strongest level recorded during the period covered by the figures.

Pakistan's overall position in the Liner Shipping Connectivity Index has also improved, moving from 35th to 34th place. Maritime authorities say stronger connections with international liner services could help facilitate trade, expand access to overseas markets and improve opportunities for businesses involved in imports and exports.

The development carries wider economic significance because Karachi Port remains a major gateway for Pakistan's international commerce. More extensive shipping connectivity can support supply chains by increasing links with global routes, while improved port services and smoother cargo movement can strengthen the country's ability to participate in regional and international trade. The gains also come as authorities continue efforts to modernise the maritime sector and improve the competitiveness of Pakistan's ports.

Officials have indicated that work will continue with port authorities, shipping companies and other industry stakeholders to strengthen maritime links further. The next phase is expected to focus on maintaining the improvement in connectivity, enhancing port services and creating conditions that can support additional trade and investment while preserving Karachi Port's growing integration with global shipping networks.
