Key points
- PIA’s first leased Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner has arrived in Islamabad from London as the airline moves to modernise its fleet and expand UK operations.
- The aircraft is the first of two planned under an ACMI agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways.
Pakistan International Airlines’ first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner arrived at Islamabad International Airport from London on Sunday, marking the introduction of the modern wide-body aircraft type into a Pakistani airline’s fleet. The leased jet completed the journey as PIA flight PK786.
PIA Chief Executive Aamir Hayat and other officials received the aircraft after it landed in Islamabad. The airline said the Dreamliner’s arrival formed part of its strategy to modernise the fleet, improve passenger facilities and expand capacity across its international network.
The aircraft includes an in-flight entertainment system and a wide-body cabin designed for long-distance travel. PIA expects the newer aircraft to offer passengers a more comfortable experience on routes where flight duration and cabin services are especially important.
The Dreamliner has been obtained through an Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways. Under this form of leasing, commonly known as an ACMI or wet lease, the provider supplies the aircraft and crew while also remaining responsible for maintenance and insurance.
PIA signed the agreement in October for two Boeing 787-9 aircraft. The partnership is intended to increase capacity between Pakistan and the United Kingdom, where the airline serves a large Pakistani diaspora and faces strong demand for direct travel options.
The Boeing 787-9 is a long-range, twin-engine aircraft built for international operations. Its fuel-efficient design and extended operating range allow airlines to serve distant destinations directly while offering a more modern cabin than many older aircraft used on comparable routes.
Before the Dreamliner’s arrival, PIA’s reported fleet included Boeing 777 long-haul jets, Airbus A320 narrow-body aircraft and smaller ATR turboprops. Adding another wide-body aircraft type gives the airline additional flexibility, although the practical benefit will depend on aircraft availability, scheduling reliability and service quality.
The aircraft is leased rather than purchased. The government previously clarified that no state-backed aircraft acquisition was taking place after reports emerged about possible sovereign-linked financing, making the ACMI arrangement operationally and financially distinct from buying new jets.
PIA was privatised in December 2025 when an Arif Habib Corporation-led consortium acquired a 75 per cent stake for Rs135 billion. The new ownership had committed to operational restructuring, fleet expansion and improved customer service as part of its effort to revive the formerly loss-making carrier.
The Dreamliner’s arrival represents a visible step in that restructuring programme, but the commercial test will come when it enters sustained passenger service. Fleet additions produce lasting value only when supported by reliable schedules, efficient operations, competitive fares and consistent cabin service.
The aircraft is expected to support direct long-haul flights connecting Pakistan with destinations in the United Kingdom. A second Boeing 787-9 is also planned under the agreement, which would further expand capacity if delivered and deployed according to the airline’s schedule.
PIA will now prepare the aircraft for regular operations and announce its deployment across specific routes. Passengers will be watching for confirmed schedules, cabin configuration, fares and whether the new aircraft improves punctuality and availability on high-demand UK services.
