Key points
- Lawyer Salman Safdar met Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi at Adiala Jail after months without direct access, discussing their health, detention conditions and pending cases.
- PTI has also moved to form a steering committee for negotiations concerning access and medical treatment.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf lawyer Salman Safdar met former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Monday, holding separate discussions about their health, detention conditions and pending legal proceedings. The meeting marked Safdar’s first direct access to the incarcerated couple in several months.
The consultation began at approximately 4:30pm and continued for around 40 minutes. Safdar met Imran Khan after a gap of seven months, while his previous meeting with Bushra Bibi had taken place about 11 months earlier, despite repeated requests for access during that period.
Safdar said the available time was insufficient to examine the full range of cases involving the PTI founder. Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi nevertheless briefed him on their health and the conditions they were experiencing inside the prison, allowing the legal team to update its understanding of their circumstances.
The couple also issued fresh instructions concerning their pending cases and other legal matters. Although details of those directions were not disclosed, the consultation is expected to shape the defence team’s approach as proceedings involving both detainees continue before different courts.
The meeting occurred amid renewed political activity over a proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment. People familiar with an internal PTI parliamentary discussion said a majority of participants supported making the party’s cooperation on the amendment conditional upon Imran Khan’s release.
That position has not yet produced a final agreement with the government, but it signals that the opposition party may seek to link constitutional negotiations with concerns about its founder’s incarceration. Any formal engagement would require the two sides to navigate both the substance of the proposed amendment and PTI’s demands regarding access, treatment and legal rights.
The parliamentary group also decided to establish a six-member steering committee to address matters connected with meetings with Imran Khan and his medical care. Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas are expected to lead the body, with representation from the National Assembly, Senate, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The committee is expected to contact government representatives and other relevant officials to pursue improved access and medical arrangements. Further developments will depend on whether those discussions produce practical measures and whether PTI converts its conditional position on constitutional changes into a formal negotiating strategy.
