Key points
- Pakistan has increased petrol by Rs5.58 per litre to Rs364.35 and high-speed diesel by Rs4.18 to Rs385.95, with the revised rates effective from September 9.
- The adjustment comes under the government's daily fuel pricing mechanism amid continued volatility in international oil markets.
Pakistan has raised petrol and high-speed diesel prices again, with the latest adjustment taking effect from September 9 as the government continues its daily petroleum pricing system. Petrol has been increased by Rs5.58 per litre, while high-speed diesel has gone up by Rs4.18 per litre, according to the Petroleum Division's latest notification.
Following the revision, petrol will be sold at Rs364.35 per litre, up from Rs358.77, while high-speed diesel will cost Rs385.95 per litre compared with the previous Rs381.77. The new rates apply nationwide from Wednesday and represent another change for consumers and businesses already adapting to frequent adjustments in fuel costs.
The latest increase comes as Pakistan's petroleum market remains exposed to sharp movements in international energy prices. Global oil markets have experienced renewed volatility amid continuing tensions in the Middle East, prompting the government to move away from its earlier fortnightly and weekly pricing schedules and adopt a system of daily reviews for major petroleum products.
Under the revised framework announced in July, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority is responsible for determining daily prices using international market trends. The mechanism is designed to pass changes in global petroleum costs through to domestic consumers more quickly. Officials have said the pricing calculations take account of recent international market averages, while changes to government levies remain subject to the relevant fiscal approvals.
Taxes and duties continue to form a significant part of retail fuel prices. The government is currently collecting about Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on high-speed diesel. These charges have become an important part of the wider debate over fuel affordability as households, transport operators and businesses face the effects of repeated revisions.
Petrol price movements have a direct impact on millions of motorists, motorcycle riders, rickshaw operators and other users of private and small commercial transport. High-speed diesel is particularly important for trucks, buses, heavy transport, generators and some power-related operations, meaning increases can feed into freight and operating costs across the economy. Higher transport expenses can also place additional pressure on supply chains carrying food, industrial goods and other essential products around Pakistan.
Despite the latest increases, both fuels remain below the extreme levels recorded earlier in the year during the sharp escalation in regional tensions. Petrol had reached Rs458.41 per litre in early April, while high-speed diesel climbed as high as Rs520.35 per litre. Prices subsequently retreated before entering the current period of frequent adjustments.
Consumers and businesses will now closely monitor the next petroleum pricing notifications as the daily review mechanism continues. Future changes will depend heavily on movements in international fuel markets and the pricing formula applied by the regulator, leaving domestic pump prices sensitive to further volatility in global energy supplies.
