CHARSADDA: Prominent religious scholar Maulana Muhammad Idrees Tarangzai was killed on Tuesday morning when unidentified armed men opened fire on his vehicle in the Utmanzai area of Charsadda. The attack, reported by 24NewsHD, also left two police constables critically injured, turning the incident into one of the day’s most alarming security developments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to initial police information, the assailants targeted the vehicle carrying Sheikhul Hadith Maulana Idrees Tarangzai and escaped soon after the shooting. The injured police personnel, who were reportedly on duty at the time, were shifted to a nearby medical facility where their condition remained serious.

A hospital in Charsadda later confirmed the death of the religious scholar. The attack triggered panic in the area as residents, bystanders and security personnel gathered near the scene while investigators began examining the route, vehicle damage and possible movement of the attackers.

Police officials said the attackers fled before they could be intercepted. Security forces secured the surrounding area, while local authorities were expected to collect evidence, review available footage and record witness statements to determine whether the attack was targeted and who may have been behind it.

Footage from the location showed a white Honda hatchback with heavy bullet marks and a badly shattered rear windshield. The shooting reportedly took place on a busy street near Muslim Model School, where the presence of civilians intensified concern over the attackers’ ability to strike in a populated area and escape.

The killing has sent shockwaves through Charsadda, where Maulana Idrees Tarangzai was known as a senior religious figure. Such attacks often carry wider social consequences because religious scholars and community leaders play a visible role in local public life, religious education and dispute mediation across many parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The incident also comes against the backdrop of earlier targeted violence in the district. On November 4, 2025, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam leader Maulana Abdul Salam was shot dead in Charsadda in a separate attack, deepening concerns about the safety of religious and political figures in the region.

For Pakistan, the latest shooting highlights the persistent challenge of protecting vulnerable public figures amid a broader security environment shaped by militant threats, targeted killings and attacks on law-enforcement personnel. The injury of two constables further underlines the risks faced by police deployed for protection duties in sensitive areas.

Authorities are now expected to intensify the investigation, identify the attackers and determine whether the incident was linked to personal enmity, militancy or a broader pattern of targeted violence. The next official updates are likely to focus on the condition of the injured constables, forensic findings and any arrests made in connection with the Charsadda attack.
