PM Vows Motorbike Subsidies Amid Gulf Crisis and Fuel Pressure

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Wednesday that public relief measures for motorcyclists would continue in coordination with provincial governments, as Pakistan faces renewed pressure from rising fuel costs linked to instability in the Gulf region.

The announcement was made during a federal cabinet meeting, where the prime minister reviewed the regional situation, the impact of higher crude oil prices and the government’s response to protect lower-income citizens from sudden increases in transport costs.

According to the report, the prime minister said subsidies for motorcycle users would remain part of the government’s relief framework. The policy is aimed at supporting millions of daily commuters who rely on two-wheelers for work, education, small business activity and household mobility.

Shehbaz Sharif also referred to Pakistan’s diplomatic role in regional de-escalation, crediting Field Marshal Asim Munir with playing a major role in efforts that helped extend the ceasefire between the United States and Iran. He said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also supported efforts aimed at reducing tensions.

The prime minister linked the domestic relief package with the wider international environment, saying the US-Iran conflict had pushed crude oil prices upward and created fresh difficulties for fuel-importing countries such as Pakistan. He said Pakistan had made sincere efforts for peace in the region while also preparing measures to reduce the burden on citizens.

Fuel prices have remained a politically sensitive issue in Pakistan because even a small increase can quickly raise transport fares, food delivery costs and business expenses. Motorcyclists are often among the most affected groups because motorcycles are widely used by workers, students, delivery riders and lower-middle-income families.
