Sindh Heatwave Alert Issued As Karachi Braces For Hot Days

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert for Sindh as temperatures are expected to rise sharply across several districts from Tuesday onward. The warning comes as Karachi and interior Sindh prepare for hotter, drier conditions that could affect daily routines, public health and outdoor work.

According to the forecast, most parts of Sindh are likely to experience hot to very hot and dry weather over the coming days. The Met Office warned that central and upper Sindh may come under heatwave-like conditions until May 3, with daytime temperatures rising four to six degrees Celsius above the normal range.

The areas expected to face the strongest impact include Jamshoro, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Ghotki and Sanghar. Other districts, including Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Jacobabad, Larkana and Sukkur, are also likely to remain in the grip of intense heat as the weather system strengthens over the province.

Weather officials advised citizens to take precautions, particularly during peak daytime hours. Children, women, elderly people and those with existing health conditions have been urged to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight, drink sufficient water and remain in shaded or cooler places whenever possible.

The advisory also extended to farmers and livestock owners, who may face operational challenges during the hotter spell. Farmers have been asked to manage wheat-related activities in line with the expected weather conditions, while livestock handlers have been advised to protect animals from prolonged exposure to extreme heat.

Karachi is also expected to remain hot during the next three days, though the most severe conditions are likely to be felt in parts of interior Sindh. The city’s maximum temperature is forecast to remain between 34°C and 36°C on Tuesday, with the mercury likely to rise to around 36°C on Wednesday and 37°C on Thursday.

Heatwave alerts are particularly important in Sindh because several districts have historically faced dangerous summer temperatures. Extended exposure to high heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, especially among labourers, commuters, schoolchildren and people living in poorly ventilated homes.

The warning also carries economic and social significance because extreme heat can affect agriculture, transport, electricity demand and public services. As temperatures rise, households often increase the use of fans, coolers and air conditioners, creating additional pressure on the power supply system at a time when demand already remains high.

Authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely and issue further updates if the weather pattern intensifies. Public awareness, access to drinking water, timely medical response and heat-protection measures will be essential in reducing risks as Sindh moves through the latest spell of extreme weather.
