Pakistan backs UNAMA extension, raises alarm over Afghan terror threat

Pakistan endorsed the United Nations Security Council’s decision to renew the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan for another three months, while using the occasion to warn that terrorism emanating from Afghan territory is worsening. Islamabad told the council that militant violence linked to Afghan soil has risen sharply and remains a direct threat to regional stability.

Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Usman Jadoon said Pakistan supports UNAMA’s role in advancing peace, security and stability in Afghanistan, where the humanitarian, human rights and narcotics crises continue to deepen. He also praised China’s efforts in building consensus around the resolution and welcomed its unanimous adoption by all 15 council members.

Pakistan told the council that elements within the Afghan Taliban are actively working with multiple militant organisations. Jadoon said the renewed mandate rightly stresses the need for the Taliban authorities to take immediate and concrete action against terrorist groups and to ensure weapons and ammunition are securely managed so they do not fall into the hands of armed networks.

Islamabad also raised concern about disinformation and operational restrictions affecting the UN mission’s work on the ground, arguing that these obstacles undermine the international community’s ability to assess conditions inside Afghanistan accurately and respond effectively.
