Leicester-based activist Majid Freeman has been cleared of all charges after a retrial overturned his earlier conviction linked to the 2022 unrest in the city. The case centered on allegations that he intended unlawful violence and used abusive language toward a police officer during the disorder.

The judge said the prosecution did not establish the required intent and highlighted evidence suggesting Freeman played a de-escalating role. The court also pointed to the difference between heated speech and genuine threats, and found key claims against him unsubstantiated.

Witness testimony and police body-worn footage were cited as supportive of Freeman’s account, including his efforts to calm tensions on the night of the unrest. A local Hindu resident, Ajay Nagla, testified that Freeman attempted to defuse the situation and that extremists were the main instigators.

The retrial also heard about video footage from the night that showed Freeman shielding a Hindu man from a violent crowd. Community organisations welcomed the acquittal, while public figures, including former MP Claudia Webbe, described Freeman as a mediator and community organiser.

Speaking after the ruling, Freeman said the years-long prosecution had placed severe strain on his family and reiterated that he tried to prevent harm during the unrest. He added that he now faces another legal case later this year related to his activism.
