ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi has cautioned that lengthy tax disputes in courts squeeze fiscal capacity and erode investor confidence, ultimately weakening broader economic stability.

He made the remarks while chairing a high-level meeting at the Supreme Court focused on reforms aimed at speeding up decisions in major tax cases that carry significant implications for public revenue and the wider economy.

Participants discussed a set of measures to reduce delays and improve predictability in tax-related litigation. The proposals included prioritising and fast-tracking high-value disputes, improving coordination between tax authorities and the justice system, strengthening legal preparedness, enhancing case management, and examining procedural or institutional steps to ensure greater consistency and quicker adjudication.

The session was framed as part of a wider justice-sector reform push intended to reduce backlogs and align judicial efficiency with national governance and development goals. The meeting was attended by Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, the chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue, and other senior officials, who reviewed options for building a sustained framework to address long-pending, high-impact tax disputes and protect public revenue through timely resolution.
