The White House has started a process that could designate certain chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organisations and specially designated global terrorists, a step that would trigger sanctions.
An executive order signed by US President Donald Trump instructs Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to report on potential designations within 45 days, according to a fact sheet cited by Reuters. Washington accuses elements of the decentralised movement of supporting or encouraging attacks against Israel and US partners, and of providing material support to Hamas.
The drive revives a longstanding push among Republicans to blacklist parts of the organisation. A similar effort surfaced during Trump’s first term, and more recently, Texas Governor Greg Abbott applied a state-level terrorist designation. Founded in Egypt in the 1920s, the Muslim Brotherhood has grown into an influential religious-political network across multiple countries, while often operating in secrecy.
Any federal designation process would involve interagency review and could vary by country chapter, including those in Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan.
