BELEM: Negotiations at COP30 drifted into overtime after the European Union refused to back a draft agreement that, in its view, would not sufficiently advance global emissions cuts.
The Brazilian presidency’s latest text omitted language on transitioning away from fossil fuels, drawing sharp resistance from the EU and civil society groups while some developing countries pressed for stronger finance commitments. Diplomats said the presidency was seeking only limited edits to the existing draft.
Options floated by negotiators included a separate voluntary side deal on fossil fuels. As talks continued, the impasse underscored the challenge of reaching consensus on emissions, energy transitions and climate finance among nearly 200 parties.
