Trump Begins East Wing Demolition to Build New White House Ballroom

Demolition crews began tearing down a section of the storied East Wing of the White House to make room for a new ballroom championed by President Donald Trump. Heavy machinery was seen picking apart the façade of the wing, a part of the complex that historically hosted the first lady’s offices, a theater and the visitor entrance for dignitaries.

The project, which Trump has previously said would be funded by himself and private donors, carries an estimated price tag of more than $250 million. The president has described the venue as a grand, stand-alone space capable of hosting up to 999 guests with views of the Washington Monument. He announced the start of construction after news images of demolition began circulating and told visiting athletes that substantial work was already underway nearby.

The White House did not immediately comment on the demolition of the current East Wing structure. On social media, Trump said the East Wing would be fully modernised as part of the process and promised the addition would respect the historic mansion.

Trump, a former real-estate developer, has pursued cosmetic and structural changes around the complex since taking office, from lavish décor in the Oval Office to a redesigned Rose Garden. He has also floated broader ideas for the capital, including a triumphal monument to mark America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

Built in 1942 atop an emergency bunker, the East Wing has long struggled to accommodate the modern volume of staff, guests and events. In recent years, several state dinners have required tents on the South Lawn, a reminder of the limits the new ballroom is meant to overcome.
