The federal government and its allies have moved toward dialogue with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf as political tension builds ahead of the party’s planned October 4 protest march. A six-member government-PPP delegation is expected to meet PTI representatives today, with both sides entering the talks amid sharp differences over the protest and the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The decision to open talks was taken after a meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at Aiwan-e-Sadr. The two leaders reviewed the country’s political and security situation and expressed concern over developments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the PTI is in government.

The government side has framed the talks as part of an effort to reduce confrontation, while also keeping pressure on the PTI over its march plan. Officials have continued to raise the possibility of governor’s rule or emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, citing the province’s security environment and the PTI-led administration’s political mobilisation.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan confirmed that government and opposition representatives would meet at noon in the office of National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. He said the government’s message for talks had been accepted after consultations within the opposition camp.

According to the announced line-up, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, PPP Senator Sherry Rehman and PPP lawmakers Naveed Qamar and Aijaz Jakhrani will represent the government and PPP. From the opposition side, Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan spokesperson Akhundzada Yousafzai confirmed participation along with Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and former senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar.

However, the proposed dialogue has already run into complications. National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai said he would not attend any meeting at the Speaker’s Chamber, the Prime Minister’s House or the Prime Minister’s Office. He said he was willing to sit anywhere else for talks, but rejected those venues because of his objections to the current government.

The opposition alliance has said it is ready for dialogue without preconditions, while the PTI has maintained that its planned march will remain peaceful. Gohar warned against imposing emergency or governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, arguing that such action would damage the federation and ignore the political mandate of the province.

Rana Sanaullah said earlier that off-the-record contacts with senior PTI leaders were already under way over the planned march. He warned that the government had arrangements in place to stop the march if it proceeded, describing the situation as different from an ordinary political protest because it involved a provincial government confronting the federal capital.

The talks are now being watched as a possible opening to defuse the confrontation before October 4. The immediate question is whether the meeting can produce a workable pause in the march plan, or whether both sides will harden their positions and push the country into another round of political escalation.
