Shehbaz, Kuwait Crown Prince discuss trade, investment and regional peace

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting formed part of Pakistan’s diplomatic engagements during the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations.

Shehbaz conveyed warm greetings to the Kuwaiti crown prince and reaffirmed Pakistan’s close relationship with Kuwait. Both leaders reviewed the state of bilateral ties and discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in areas where the two countries see potential for deeper engagement.

Trade and investment featured prominently in the discussion. The prime minister highlighted opportunities for stronger economic cooperation and greater commercial engagement between Pakistan and Kuwait. The meeting also covered the energy sector, an area with direct relevance for Pakistan as it works to strengthen economic resilience and maintain reliable access to international energy markets.

Human resource development was another area identified for possible cooperation. Pakistan has a large workforce with experience across technical, professional and service sectors, while Gulf economies continue to pursue development and diversification programmes. Closer institutional engagement in this area could create additional opportunities for training, employment and professional exchange if followed by practical agreements.

The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments. Their discussion took place during a UN General Assembly session shaped by ongoing conflicts, economic pressures and security challenges across several regions. Both sides reiterated their commitment to peace, stability and prosperity, reflecting an emphasis on diplomatic engagement as governments confront a difficult international environment.

For Pakistan, the meeting adds another bilateral engagement to the prime minister’s programme in New York. Shehbaz is attending the UN General Assembly with a senior delegation and is expected to use the visit to present Pakistan’s positions on international security, development, climate issues and economic cooperation while holding meetings with foreign leaders and international officials.

The meeting with the Kuwaiti crown prince did not include the announcement of a new bilateral treaty or major commercial agreement. Instead, the official account focused on identifying areas where existing relations could be expanded, particularly trade, investment, energy and human resource development. Further progress would depend on follow-up discussions between the relevant ministries, diplomatic missions and economic institutions of the two countries.

Pakistan and Kuwait are expected to maintain diplomatic contact after the UN gathering as officials explore ways to translate the priorities discussed in New York into concrete cooperation. Future developments could include additional economic consultations, investment discussions and sector-specific engagement as both governments seek to broaden their bilateral relationship.
