Five Terrorists Killed, 23 Abductees Rescued in Kalat Highway Operation

Security forces killed five suspected terrorists and recovered 23 abducted people during an operation near Kalat on the N-25 Karachi-Chaman highway in Balochistan, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations. The operation followed an attempt by armed militants to disrupt traffic on the key national route by setting up an illegal checkpoint used for abductions, extortion and the seizure of vehicles.

The military said the militants established the checkpoint during the night of September 18 and 19. Security personnel responded to the disruption and engaged the group in an exchange of fire, during which five militants were killed. The 23 people being held by the group were subsequently recovered from a hideout in the area.

Authorities also recovered six trucks, three buses and two cars during the operation. Weapons, ammunition and explosives were found at the site, according to the military statement. Security personnel continued search and clearance activity in surrounding areas after the main operation to check for any remaining threats and help restore secure movement along the highway.

The military described the militants under the state designation Fitna-al-Hindustan, a term used by Pakistani authorities for Balochistan-based armed groups they allege receive external support. Officials said the latest action was part of the country's continuing counterterrorism campaign and reiterated that security forces and law-enforcement agencies would maintain operations against militant networks.

The N-25 is an important transport artery linking Karachi with Quetta and the Chaman border region. Security incidents along major highways can disrupt passenger travel and commercial freight while creating risks for drivers, transport operators and communities dependent on the routes. Recovering the vehicles and abducted travellers therefore carries significance beyond the immediate security operation by helping restore movement on the corridor.

The Kalat action comes amid a series of security operations across Balochistan. A day earlier, security officials reported that 11 militants had been killed in separate operations in Panjgur and Chagai districts. Earlier in September, security forces also reported multiple counterterrorism operations in Mastung, Quetta, Kalat, Sibi, Kharan, Washuk and other parts of the province.

Balochistan has faced persistent militant violence, prompting intensified security activity in recent months. A monthly assessment cited in reporting on the security situation recorded 89 terrorist attacks in the province during August, compared with 83 in July, representing a seven per cent increase. The trend has kept protection of highways, population centres and security installations high on the authorities' agenda.

The immediate focus following the Kalat operation is expected to remain on sanitisation of nearby areas and securing the N-25 for travellers and commercial traffic. Authorities have not announced additional arrests linked to the incident, and further details may emerge as security agencies examine the recovered weapons, explosives and other material and continue operations against militant networks in Balochistan.
